Doctoral Writing Fellow

Paulo Freire (he/him), Brazilian (native Portuguese speaker), is a Doctoral Writing Fellow for the Graduate and Postdoctoral Writing Center (GPWC). In his role at the GPWC, Paulo works with graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to provide one-on-one feedback and assist in writing and science communication development.

Paulo holds a bachelor’s degree in Bioprocess and Biotechnology Engineering from the São Paulo State University (UNESP), and his main interest lies in the multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary aspects of science. His background combines the subjects of engineering (mathematics, physics, and chemistry) and biology (microbiology, molecular biology, and synthetic biology). He is also interested in supporting the development of STEM skills among students, and is a member of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

Currently, Paulo is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biological Sciences at UNC Charlotte. His research is focused on deep-sea microbes and their roles in biogeochemical cycles. Using bioinformatics tools, he investigates bacteria and viruses inhabiting deep-sea hydrothermal vent ecosystems to understand their potential impacts on the deep-ocean food web and carbon cycling.
