Niner Nation Gives March 31 – April 2

A friend of the WRC has challenged Niner Nation to support the Writing Resources Fund for NNG–10 gifts will unlock their generous $5,000 prize!

Charlotte’s Writing Resources Center (WRC) has been supporting Niners since 1976 when an English faculty member and three students began tutoring writing in a telephone closet in Atkins Library. Almost 50 years later, the WRC has become a vital student support center, offering one-to-one tutoring for writers in any discipline and of all skill levels.

When you make a gift of support to the WRC, you contribute to the health of the university as a whole. Our top priorities include:

  • One-to-One Tutoring & Presentations. Over the past three years, the WRC has seen a rise in the number of students, faculty, and staff that engage with the WRC. Additionally in 2022, WRC administration raised tutor salaries from $10-11 to $12 per hour for starting tutors. As the demand for WRC services grows so does the need to increase our staff and our hours. Donations allow for the WRC to support Charlotte’s writers through our most important services: one-to-one tutoring and writing presentations and workshops.
  • WRC Undergraduate Student Research. WRC tutors are passionate about pursuing projects outside of their tutoring hours. Such projects inform best practices for tutoring in the WRC; increase our visibility across campus, and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the WRC and the university at large. Gifts to the WRC help: pay students hourly for elective projects and research related to the WRC, fund student travel to conference, and fund materials related to student projects (e.g. gift cards for study participants, audio-visual equipment, etc.).
  • Student Success and Retention Projects. The WRC is committed to supporting all Charlotte’s students. We are currently engaged in a longitudinal research study of writing self-efficacy (confidence). Additionally, WRC tutors are given an opportunity to join a WRC Team, each with a different topic. The team topics (developed by tutors) include multilingual writing, WRC promotion/marketing, Generative AI, and disciplinary/genre writing. The groups developed semester-long SMART projects (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound) related to their team topics.
