Types of Tutoring
We offer three types of tutoring sessions for clients: in-person tutoring, video conferencing, and e-tutoring.
In-Person Tutoring
In-person sessions are the most common form of tutoring that the WRC offers. These sessions are structured to give you up to 45 minutes of one-on-one time with a tutor inside the WRC. The best way to benefit from in-person sessions is to talk with your tutor about what you want to focus on and what your overall goals are for any piece of writing that you’re working on. We encourage you to bring in any resources, assignment sheets, and ideas so that your session will be as productive as possible. Our tutors can offer tips and feedback no matter where you are in the writing process, from initial brainstorming all the way to finalizing a work.
Remember, our goal is to help teach you to identify and understand the strengths and weaknesses of your writing, help you find answers, and help you learn how to research, write, revise, and proofread on your own. We want you to become a better writer, not just to improve the quality of one specific paper.
Any UNC Charlotte student, faculty, or staff member is welcome to schedule an appointment using our online scheduler (uncc.mywconline.com).
Video Conferencing (Zoom)
Video conferencing is very similar to a face-to-face session, except the session is conducted through Zoom. Although most clients use video during video conferencing sessions, you may choose to only use audio or the chat feature if that is more comfortable for you.
Just like face-to-face sessions, you’ll have up to 45 minutes to work with your tutor one-on-one. During video conferencing appointments, some clients pull up the piece of writing they want to review on their computer and then share their computer screen with their tutor. You can also upload your work to your appointment slot on our online scheduler (uncc.mywconline.com) so it is accessible to both you and your tutor during your session. Video conferencing session structures can be adapted to suit other needs you may have as well. We especially suggest you use this service for brainstorming and understanding assignment expectations and/or instructor feedback.
Remember, our goal is to help teach you to identify and understand the strengths and weaknesses of your writing, help you find answers, and help you learn how to research, write, revise, and proofread on your own. We want you to become a better writer by learning how to improve the quality of your writing overall, not just to improve the quality of one specific paper.
Video-Conferencing sessions are a great option for clients who want to meet face-to-face, but can’t physically make it to the WRC. Any UNC Charlotte student, faculty, or staff member is welcome to schedule an appointment using our online scheduler (uncc.mywconline.com).
HOW TO ACCESS VIDEO CONFERENCING SESSIONS
First, make sure you have scheduled an appointment using our online scheduler (uncc.myconline.com). Then, follow the instructions:
- Log onto the WRC Zoom room. The link is available at the top of the online schedule. Or, join here and use the password, WRC.
- Our receptionist will let you into the Zoom room and assign you to a breakout room.
- Your tutor will meet you in the breakout room. They may ask you to share your screen, so have your documents ready on your computer.
- When your session ends, your tutor will send you a client report form with information about your session.
E-tutoring (Asynchronous)
If you make an e-tutoring appointment, you’ll upload a copy of your writing to the online scheduling system (uncc.mywconline.com) for a tutor to review. During the hour you booked for a session, the tutor will take a look at your writing and send you a feedback letter by the end of the hour. Although face-to-face sessions provide the best learning conditions, anyone may schedule an e-tutoring appointment. You don’t have to be present for the session, which makes this a great choice for clients who have busy schedules.
HOW E-TUTORING SESSIONS WORK
Schedule an Appointment
You’ll first need to make an appointment using our online scheduler (uncc.mywconline.com). While you’re filling out the Appointment Form, please give your tutor as much information as possible in the “What writing are you bringing to discuss?” box. This is the only time you will be able to share your questions or comments with your tutor, so be as detailed as you can.
Any UNC Charlotte student, faculty, or staff member is welcomed to schedule an appointment using our online scheduler (uncc.mywconline.com). For more information on how to schedule your online appointment now, visit our Schedule an Appointment page.
Upload a Document
Before your session begins, you’ll need to upload a document for your tutor to review. Due to compatibility, we are only able to accept documents within 1MB in size. There are two ways to upload a document: 1) when you make an appointment, or 2) after you make an appointment. Read below for a complete list of directions.
